About Us
Education Perspectives podcast explores the challenges and opportunities in education from birth through productive work. Everyone seems to agree in principle that education is important. So, why is it so hard for us to get to a system that works for our society as it exists today? At every level, there is frustration. “They are not preparing students for my system’s needs.”
Everyone has a different perspective to share. Parents, childcare workers, teachers, principals, district and state education employees, legislators, employers, suppliers, and the list goes on. Education touches us all. Education Perspectives allows us to understand one another, our challenges and dreams.
Education conferences today often feature such visionaries as Tony Wagoner and Sir Ken Robinson, who offer pathways towards a totally transformed system of education. Pilot programs by out of the box thinkers have sprung up all over the world. Unfortunately, it has not made a dent into the greater institutions most of us are familiar with. How can we take spots of brilliance and make them mainstream? Effective communication is a place to start. Each level of education is built upon so many governmental rules and regulations, it is often hard to see the forest for the trees. Federal rules, state rules, district rules, certification groups, school policies…the list goes on. Educators are rarely given enough time to collaborate for daily instruction, let alone talk to educators who work a level below or above them. On top of that, each system has its unique vocabulary.
Taking the 30,000-foot view to look at the entirety of our multiple systems so that we might begin to plot a course towards transformational change is worthwhile. This type of change cannot happen until people are “rowing the boat” in the same direction. Education Perspectives includes interviews with people engaged in the work at every level. Looking at challenges and opportunities, as well as what they would like for decision makers to know. This type of communication changes the dialog. Understanding where the other people in the room are coming from breaks down barriers and opens conversation on a broader level.
Framed by the host, Liza Holland, through the lens of having worked in multiple roles with each level, Education Perspectives can give policy makers, administrators, education advocates and the community a unique view into this education journey. Considering these various perspectives to make for better communication has the potential to reframe discussions and move policy makers' understanding forward to make policy which will better meet the needs of our information economy.
